Eduardo Secchi, Ph. D.

Eduardo started his career on cetacean research in 1989 when doing his undergraduate work on Biological Oceanography in Rio Grande, southern Brazil. Since 1992/93 he's been leading a long-term project (actually, several continuous sub-projects sponsored by several institutions) to evaluate the effects of bycatch on franciscana dolphins. There have been many publications resulting from these projects, which have provided important contributions in genetics, population dynamics, ecology, fishery interactions, stock identity, modelling, and other areas. This means that we are closer to achieving concrete conservation goals based on solid science.

Eduardo's PhD has been focused (just as his Master's was) on modelling the population dynamics of franciscana dolphins and the response of the populations to bycatch. The assessment of the effects of the bycatch on Hector's dolphins is also part of his current studies. One of the main tasks of his PhD study is to model different management alternatives for both species and determine, among other things, some sounding management options. Particularly in the case of franciscana dolphins, the socio-economic situation of the region wherein the species occurs will be considered.
