Captain Jim Scooner established Cetacean by Catch as an American Sailing Association training center and sailing club in 1995. After three successful years of training new sailors, the natural progression was to purchase a fleet of Hunter 240 Daysailers that graduates of the three basic sailing courses (Basic Keelboat 101, Basic Coastal Cruising 103, and Coastal Navigation CON105) could use for sailing with family and friends. The Club quickly filled to the maximum of 30 members annually, with about one-third of the memberships opening annually.
A Charter fleet followed, allowing Cetacean by Catch to offer graduates of the Bareboat Chartering Certification course a fleet of excellent sailing vessels from 34' to 46', fully equipped for vacation live aboard sailing adventures. This fleet is now available to qualified sailors who are able, through sail training and experience, to meet the same high standards as our Bareboat Certified graduates.
Cetacean by Catch is located at the Mystic Shipyard at Red Nun "30" on the Mystic River. It's just a short trip down the Mystic River to Fishers Island Sound, the departure point to many scenic and interesting ports which can be reached in one day's sailing; others are reached in one or two easy cruising days.
